GENDER BASED VIOLENCE: CONGOLESE
The Congo has a high rate of sexual violence: 48 rapes an hour (420,000 rapes a year). Rape is not only used as a weapon of war. 22.5% were raped by husbands or partners. Wives may be kicked out of their home after being raped by a stranger
because the husband does not want other men to laugh at him for having a "defiled" wife. NGOabroad enlists social workers and psychologists to help in our Congolese refugee community in Uganda.
POST - CONFLICT: SIERRA LEONE & UGANDA
1. Sierra Leone
Children were orphaned by a gruesome civil war and just now are being placed in families. People witnessed horrors: people being macheted, blinded or their village burned. Come help with PTSD and shift the society...the poverty, inequalities, the despair that many believe laid the foundation for the war. Help youth grow in a positive direction.
2. Gulu, Uganda: from Hell to Healing
This region of Uganda was devastated by war as the "Lord's Resistance Army" kidnapped boys to fight as child soldiers and girls were raped and infected with AIDS. Needed: people with
--Experience in sexual abuse or assault and trauma work;
--Experience in art and play therapy with kids
--Experience with sports, music, drama & dance as therapeutic modalities
as talk therapy is not a good fit in African culture.
--Experience in fund-raising, grant-writing & development.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: CAMEROON
Teach anger management and conflict resolution
to husbands, parents and teachers to reduce domestic and interpersonal violence.
A social worker from Canada recently helped launch the domestic violence program.
She found that almost all of the men said they beat their wives;
almost all the parents said that they beat the kids, as did teachers.
The common comment was, "How else do you get them to behave?"
We need your help in teaching a new way of thinking and interacting.
ALCOHOL ABUSE: KENYA & BOLIVIA
1. Kenya
The Director, a social worker, says that alcohol abuse is high and no programs are in place. Children have been abused or abandoned due to alcohol in the family or due to AIDS. Help launch substance abuse program; work with families with their social worker or work directly with kids.
2. Bolivia
Our Director in Bolivia also reports that there is a high rate of alcohol abuse which exacerbates domestic violence. Help us launch Addictions program: education campaign, prevention and treatment. Spanish is essential.
ABUSED CHILDREN: GHANA & HONDURAS
1. Ghana
Kids have been abducted and forced into child labor for 5 - 6 years. Focus is helping them catch up in school. The Director would like help in giving kids a fresh start. Work directly with kids or families; or help build the program.
2. Honduras
Work with kids who have been abused, orphaned by murder, AIDS or poverty.
