Community Bulletin Board...
Just like the original version of the Social Work Cafe, this is where EVERYONE is invited to post his or her announcements. For example, some organizations have used the CBB for posting job openings, advertising their company website, or publicizing Requests for Proposals. Students have used this area to ask for help with term papers. Some social workers are just looking for professional contacts because they have moved to a new service area.

*There is no limit to the amount of time an announcement can be posted on this page, unless instructed by the author of the original request.

All postings are done FREE of charge! Remember to type "CBB" in the subject box. Please send any comments, ads, or requests to:

Advocate4Elders - Senior Drivers

"The U.S Census Bureau has determined that by 2030, one in five drivers will be age 65 or older, which means there will be more than 30 million older drivers on our roads" (AAA, 2005).   Statistics reveal older drivers have more traffic crashes and fatalities than all other age groups other than the youngest drivers (Higgins, 2003).  Due to these facts driving safety is an important issue in the coming years.  As a person ages their physical abilities are known to decline.  DMV spokesman, Evan Nossoff, reported "After age 80, there is a sharp decline in driving ability, although many drivers continue driving safely."

Until legislative guidelines can be enacted to further address the issue of driving in the elderly, improvements can be undertaken to reduce the presence of unsafe elderly drivers on our roads. We (MSW students at California State University, Bakersfield), are striving to create an awareness among social workers regarding available DMV forms to report driving elders which are suspected to be unsafe and in need of a re-examination. The form is used by a person who is not a physician or a police officer to notify the DMV of a driver who has a possible medical or physical condition that can affect the safe operation of motor vehicles.

Through the provided website (
http://www.dmv.org/publications.php) you click on your state of residence and search under "Find DMV Forms" to find the appropriate form for the state in which you practice.  The form can also be accessed directly through your states DMV website.

As individuals who are passionate about our nation's elderly, we look forward to your powerful recognition concerning elderly driving. We strongly urge you to implement the form into your social work practice, and inform other social workers on how they can protect our roads and our elders.

Thank you,

Polaris Child Welfare Project - Automated Assessment System

I am a Principal Investigator for a number of NICHD grants in the areas of child welfare and domestic violence. I am writing to invite your participation in an NIH-sponsored project to implement Polaris Child Welfare, a computer-supported assessment system for child welfare agencies working with abused and neglected youth that is designed to develop resiliency and improve functioning.

The goal of this project is to implement an automated assessment system to support child welfare systems’ operational practice, including a predictive model of successful reunification/permanency.

The Polaris Child Welfare system enables interagency treatment team members (counselors, case managers, therapists) as well as youth and their families (birth/foster/caregivers) to provide and access information useful in monitoring mental health status and progress. Informants complete assessments via the Internet.  Through automated reports, child welfare and mental health professionals are able to easily identify problem and strength areas, and determine whether positive change is occurring as families learn the skills needed to establish safety and permanency.

Participation involves collection of youth and parent assessment data over a one-year period.  Selected sites will receive ongoing free access to software, and both case-level and aggregate (program-level) reports. A stipend for participation is available.

Please contact me at

Looking forward to having the opportunity to discuss and share social work values and approaches with others in my field. Of particular interest to me are issues involving ethics, and "complex" patient care; particularly in the hospital setting. I am an ER social worker with a good deal of experience - but sadly, there exists very little "support" in the professional community. So, having heard about your site from a student, I thought I would step out on a limb and try something different..! I am not familiar with internet resources/chat rooms etc., but hope to find something refreshing and fulfilling herein.

Please participate in an important study!

A Survey of social workers' views on immigration:

Immigration has once again become an important topic in US politics, and social work practitioners are, as usual, at the frontlines. Little, however, is known about their views on immigration and immigrants. This study is designed to gather this information. Please help us disseminate this survey to social work practitioners.

1.  This is an ANONYMOUS survey. We will not track IP addresses and will not have any way of linking answers to individuals or their email addresses.

2.  Eligible participants will  have COMPLETED a BSW and/or MSW degree AND are CURRENTLY employed as a social worker (providing services such as counseling, case management, administration, advocacy, community outreach, community organizing, etc.) in the United States.

3. Please note that for research purposes, full-time faculty or academic appointees, practicum students, and volunteer service providers are NOT ELIGIBLE for participation. Part-time faculty who are social work practitioners ARE ELIGIBLE.

If you are eligible, please click on the link below to find out more about the survey.

NORFOLK COUNTY PSYCHOLOGISTS TEAM TO LEAD
PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOP ON COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

Medway, Medfield Practitioners Offer Hands-On Training for Clinicians Treating Children and Adults
Two established psychologists and Norfolk County residents with practices in Medway and Medfield have joined forces to offer a day-long workshop to help clinicians integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) into their therapeutic practice. Carol Perlman, Ph.D. and Jacqueline Vorpahl, Ph.D. will lead "Improving Patient Outcome with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Hampton Inn in Natick, MA.  Dr. Perlman, a former staff psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, currently practices in Medway and will lead the program for clinicians treating adults. Medfield psychologist Dr. Vorpahl, a child and family therapy specialist formerly on staff at BU School of Medicine, will teach the child/adolescent program. Both workshops are approved to offer Continuing Education credits for psychologists and licensed social workers.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a unique therapeutic approach that focuses on the interaction between how people think and feel, and the ways they act.  Workshop attendees will receive hands-on training in adapting the tools and techniques of CBT into their own therapeutic style.

The registration fee for "Improving Patient Outcome with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" is $225; $200 for groups of three or more registering together; $100 for students. For registration or more information go to
www.carolperlman.com or www.vpa-psychologist.com.

Developing and Building a Private Practice: Marketing/Increasing Income

Do you have too little clients, and too much time on your hands?  Or are you spending too much time on your practice for too little money?  Not sure where to spend your marketing time or dollars?  Having trouble getting paid for your services?

Attention all Clinical Social Workers:

Would you like to get more referrals or referral sources and keep them coming back for more?  Would you like training on how to “make the sale” when you have a potential client or referral source on the line?  Maybe you just need some support, validation and encouragement through your practice-building experience?  Or perhaps you’d like to learn how to get more quality referrals that are non-managed care and/or pay higher rates?  Or maybe you’d like to attract a certain type of clientele to fill your caseload and have been unable to do so?  I can help.

A little about me: I have been practicing as an Licensed Clinical Social Worker for the past 11 years, in private practice, Employee Assistance Program and managed care settings.  I have a proven track record of building up a successful group practice, and have countless ideas as well as “tried and true” suggestions and recommendations.  I have also learned the hard way with various methods and would like to share those as well.  Consultations are usually done via phone and/or online but other arrangements may be able to be made.  I am looking forward to hearing from you and hope that you will take advantage of this service that would be tailored specifically for you and your practice.

ADOPT - New Delhi India

I work for an organization called ADOPT. We are working in the field of health, sanitation, environment, education, water conservation and women empowerment.

We are actively involved in facilitating Heart Surgery of underprivileged children of rural India. In the last 3 years we have supported the heart surgery of 130 patients.

Women constitute 50% of the population and are the backbone of the family. Their problems are generally ignored and their perspectives on development are also left unaddressed. The struggle for survival continues among the poor people, of which the women are the worst sufferers.  It is strongly felt that unless rural women are relieved of their existing workload, they will not be able to cope with additional responsibilities. They are the victims of disparity in availability of basic facilities of living. Lack of access to safe water, proper sanitation facilities, efficient & easily available cooking fuel. These are some of the causes of drudgery of rural women.

In India "Women have to suffer in silence" despite the advances of today's world. There are billions of families who still do not have any access to adequate sanitation facilities. Women & girls must wait till it is dark to defecate, exposing themselves to harassment and sexual assault. The condition of those who are pregnant and ageing is particularly pitiable. Women also develop diseases of the digestive tract as they are forced to suppress their urge to go out to the open till sunset. The increasing disappearance of green cover, and the privacy it used to offer, has contributed to a further loss of dignity. Open defecation is also responsible for deadly diseases like diarrhea, cholera & typhoid. Our hearts reach out for the safety of these women and girls.

We build toilets in villages to provide safety and dignity to these women.Rural Women depend upon biomass fuels, such as firewood, animal waste and crop residues for meeting cooking and heating energy requirements. These fuels are burnt in an inefficient manner in traditional chulhas, causing not only economic loss to the nation but also severe health problems to the women. While the present level of consumption of firewood is considered unsustainable, the burning of animal waste and agricultural residues deprives our soils of much needed organic matter, adversely affecting soil health and agricultural productivity. Also the pressure on forests by the abutting villages to meet their domestic energy needs have resulted in considerable degradation of our forests. The woman faces drudgery in walking long distances searching, selecting, collecting and carrying fuel wood from the forest, exposure to smoke in the kitchen and time consumed for cleaning and cleaning utensils. Most of the rural women suffer from breathlessness due to exposure to smoke from  burning firewood. This weakens their lungs and makes them susceptible to disease like tuberculosis.

Relief can be brought to these women by introducing suitable appropriate technologies to reduce time and energy spent on gender specified tasks. Alternatives like building individual biogas plants not only save women's drudgery by providing healthy and hygienic cooking conditions but also saves  trees by reducing the consumption of fuel wood. Lets provide dignity to the underprivileged women by building toilets.
